Energy and Food

There many different approaches to improving our health by looking at what we take in through our food and water and air and the vibrations we pick up.

One other way to be in touch with nature- our natural way of wellbeing – is through our intimate connection with the earth. The foods that we take into our bodies, the foods that are grown in and from the earth’s vital nutrients, give these essential vibrations to us. This path leads us to the understanding of the importance of the door of nutrition. This may be a most important door. If some changes are needed it may seem overwhelming. Very simply we can remember: Vegetables = Vitamins = Vitality!

What we take into our bodies really has a profound effect, whether it’s sugar donuts or vegetable soup, whether it's taking in excess, or the effect of depletion or lack . .There are delicious and easy ways to eat well! Please include whole grains and fresh vegetables. Discover what your favorites are right now.  Remember, your tastes have most probably changed since you were a kid and they may be a surprise 5 years from now!. Experiment with new seasoning and aim for a good variety.. Look to reduce those chemical additives and highly refined foods. Little changes can make an absolutely huge difference.

Our Real Nature

Healing avenues such as herbal remedies work better for us when we have the base of nutrients that is part of our real nature. Another factor to be aware of here is that incomplete digestion, poor assimilation and/or substances that are toxic to our system, can sabotage or diminish the benefits of other healing methods being practiced.

What is something that is toxic for you? It is an individual thing. You may not think it’s possible, but we all do have the knowledge within ourselves to know what we may be eating or drinking that may be a problem for us. Usually it is something that we have often. Yes, most of the time a little of something “bad” is not a problem.  To get back to healthy balance, completely eliminate the suspected item to clear it out of your systems – see how you feel. Remember, the best of cures, surgeries or healing interventions may work for us for a while, but if we continue to add those "toxins", blocks to our "flow" reoccur. It is not so easy to change; yet it is worth it to feel the real flow of your strength and creativity.

 

Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. Our food should be our medicine. Our medicine should be our food. But to eat when you are sick, is to feed your sickness.

There is a way to get back to healthy balance. Completely eliminate the suspected item to clear it out of your systems – see how you feel! Many report that in as little as one day dramatic results can be felt- from depression lifting to relief of stomach distress. Be patient with yourself if it takes longer for you. After clearing the item from your system, perhaps 3 weeks, you can try ingesting the substance in quantity and feel any effects. There is also an important tool to help our accessing the body's wisdom and find what may be toxic to us known as kinesiology, dowsing, muscle or energy testing. Dear Friends Worldwide,
We share in the profound sympathy and empathy for the people of Japan. The earthquake and tsunami tragedy joins us together as a family, with the nuclear radiation fallout of deepest concern for all life on the planet. 
• Lino and I spoke with Michio and Midori Kushi on two occasions this week. Living in Boston, both are doing well. They are of course, most deeply concerned for the people and environment of their home country. Their families are in other regions away from the epicenter of the earthquake. The Kushi Institute in Tokyo and the Macrobiotic Centers in other cities survived the turmoil and are safe. We are encouraged to send our prayers, mediations, and assistance to Japan, however we are able.

Food for Thought
• Our Japanese food, so healing and marvelous, is in peril. Radiation from the nuclear plants is permeating the air, water, and land of Japan. As we know, this radioactive air has carried over the ocean with evidence of radiation in California. These healing foods, staples in the macrobiotic diet, can help protect us from radiation, as they always strengthen our immunity. Remember the story of the Nagasaki hospital where the employees ate miso soupbrown rice, sea vegetables - and survived the WWII nuclear bomb, while thousands perished from radiation illness? According to a 1964 McGill University study, published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal, kombu/kelp reduces intestinal absorption of radioactive strontium-90 by up to 80% (thus it passes through the body instead of sticking around). 

Urgent Issues: 
• Increasing sea vegetable consumption to protect against radiation • Eating highly nutritious diets • Obtaining safe food 
• NOTE: Many people are taking pills of Potassium Iodide, however, these have been shown to have severe side effects. Top nutritionists agree that getting our nutrients from whole foods is most safe and balanced. 
1. We need to increase our consumption of high-iodine, high-mineral sea vegetables, a common staple in our macrobiotic diet. Lino and I feel that doubling our typical daily consumption (up to five tablespoons of sea vegetables per day, as needed). Consult your health/macrobiotic counselor regarding sea vegetable consumption in these times.  

Here is a list of Sea Vegetables:
• Kombu/kelp/highest in natural iodine (cooked regularly in beans, grains, and vegetables dishes)
• Wakame (in soups and salads)
• Arame (in stir-fried dishes, salads, spring rolls)
• Hiziki (in stir-fried dishes, salads, spring rolls)
• Dulse (highest in iron, prepared in salads, flaked/sprinkled, or toasted)
• Nori (popular in sushi rolls, flakes, condiment)
• Agar Agar (clear, flavorless thickening and gelling properties-makes gello/kanten desserts and more)

2. Several health experts are recommending eating many organic macrobiotic foods to strengthen immunity and block absorption of radiation/strontium. 
Here is a compiled list:
• Sea vegetables, especially kelp/kombu-delicious and mild tasting, used daily in cooking beans
• Miso- in soup form with wakame. (Jane has included a favorite recipe below.) One to two bowls of miso soup a day is recommended. Studies show that miso strengthens people's resistance to radiation poisoning by up to five times, according to 1990 Hiroshima University research. 
• Fermented Foods (tempeh, miso, tamari, natto, umeboshi, non-heated sauerkraut and pickles)
• Green vegetables, high in chlorophyll
Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, turnips, cabbage, spinach, cauliflower, and greens such as kale)
Dark Leafy Greens including dark, leafy vegetables (broccoli, kale, romaine, endive, chicory, escarole, watercress, collard greens, mustard and dandelion greens)
• Dark yellow and orange vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes, yams, pumpkins, winter squash) and fruits (cantaloupe, apricots, peaches).
Whole grains • Beans/Legumes
• Foods containing natural Vitamin A such as lima beans, potatoes, yams, sweet potatoes, asparagus, onions, apples, strawberries
• Seeds (especially pumpkin, sesame, sunflower), all nuts sparingly.
Sesame seed oil contains a substance that increases blood platelets – a must for fighting infection. Use in moderation.
• Kukicha Tea, Hojicha, Green tea, Pau D'Arco Tea  
Food Supplements: Spirulina, Chlorella, Barley Greens
NOTE: Eliminate consumption of refined white sugar and reduce baked flour products.

 

Delicious Miso Vegetable Soup

This is a classic miso soup, so healing, soothing, and delicious! Enjoy it at any time of day and know you are strengthening your immunity, beginning good digestion of the meal, and reducing radiation absorption. Contains healing miso and wakame sea vegetable. Serves 4.

4  cups water

2 inch strip dry wakame, rinsed and soaked in 1/2 cup water

¼ cup yellow onion, thinly sliced

¼ cup carrot, sliced thinly

2 Tablespoons broccoli flowerettes, cut into bite-sized pieces

1 Tablespoon chickpea or barley miso, to taste (non-pasteurized-aged three years)

1 Tablespoon fresh parsley, minced or in leaves

In a pot, place water and heat. Slice the wakame into small pieces and add with soak water to the pot.  Bring to boil. Add the onion and carrot, reduce heat and simmer 3 minutes. Add the broccoli and simmer one minute.

In a small bowl or cup, place the miso; dissolve thoroughly with a small amount of warm soup stock. Reduce the soup pot heat to very low to stop boiling. Add the dissolved miso, gently stir, and let simmer for three minutes. Serve in soup bowls, garnished with raw fresh parsley. Eat warm.

There are endless variations of miso and of miso soup. Numerous vegetables (corn, squash, shiitake, bok choy, etc.) can be substituted and enjoyed. You may add a spoon of cooked whole grains on occasion. Let us know how you like this recipe. Share it with others.

Stock up on miso, sea vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, umeboshi, and other healing foods. Many distributors have stocks of pre-March 11 Japanese foods. The USA now has excellent sources of miso and sea vegetables. Let us all cultivate local producers of umeboshi, shiitake, lotus, etc., or grow our own.We plan to do so! Macrobiotics: A key to Nutrition

There are many good programs to inspire and educate us. Macrobiotic teaching is one that includes the understanding of opposites, the yin/yang, the extremes of things in our world, and how to find health as we to seek to be in balance.

Macrobiotic is usually defined as "big life" or "long life" or "great life"  The practice of Macrobiotics involves an understanding of balance in the world and in ourselves. As we see how extreme foods and energy of all kinds affect us, we can learn to come to center and really and truly know what it feels like to feel "great".

Macrobiotics is often thought of as a "healing diet". Actually, this healthful cuisine is actually just a part of the big picture. There is so much we can do to assist our bodies to be at our natural balance.
